Why We are the Them?

About two years ago I was complaining to my husband that in the US we talk about our rights..but rarely our responsibilities. When there is a problem...we moan about "them" and if only "they" would do something. I said "There is no "them" it's all us." To which my husband challenged "You should write a book titled We are the Them." I haven't written a book, but maybe this blog is one step closer. This blog is about our family picking one focus for each month and instead of talking about it..doing something.

putting the cloth bags in the car is one thing. It's remembering to bring them in the store!

Reminds me of Pogo's comment: "We have met the enemy and he is us". Great start on your year!

A question for you: would it be better to use those plastic refrigerator dishes (the ones that last for years) rather than the tinfoil or waxed paper to wrap lunch foods? It isn't plastic but it keeps down the waste stream which is what many of us are concerned about.

Ann: Mark agrees..he forgets them in the car too!

Trudy: We have talked about was paper or re-useable plastic. Mark uses re-uesable plastic. I am using a tiffin which is a metal lunch carrier.

We will follow your lead! One question, when you buy in bulk, what do you put the items in?

Great question: this time around we used plastic bags we already had and netting that we got from the farm this summer. We talked about making or buying cloth bags just for bulk ( lighter weight/tighter weave fabric) For dish soap, we kept our plastic bottles and refilled. For some things..like peanut butter..I'm going to try glass mason jars.

As always, am inspired by your proactive steps. I think we will try the bring our own bags instead of using the grocery check out bags. Our standard grocery is wall to wall plastic....but I will look for more options, even if it is to purchase one large container of something instead of the smaller individual portions (which are more convenient, but not as earth friendly).

from Ginny and Greg
We use cloth recycle bags now and our grocery here in FL has a big sign in the window saying "DID you remember your bags?" This helps. I hardly ever forget them now!! We do need to ban them. When we were out west a few years ago every fence just had tons of bags stuck to them.
Greg asks, can plastic bags be burned?

We re-use bags at the grocery store, plastic and paper. My biggest plastic bag frustration is the long-thin bag that we get our newspaper in. Any ideas?
