Julie: I think this is a great family project! But okay, about this contest. Do people with more family members automatically get more points because they go on more trips? or is the number of points divided by the # of people accruing them? (If not, suggest that Ben adopt a few more family members). Then there is the issue of those of us who combine errands into a single trip or go to nearby vendors -- do you lose points because you went to the store, the library, etc. in a single trip vs 2 or more trips? That is one of my strategies to reduce my car energy use. And what about the person who just stays home (my sister contributed that comment) - shouldn't we get points for not transporting ourselves?
OK, let's see if I can address your questions. Regarding # of family members...luckily this first round, the families involved all either have 4 members or recruited an ad hoc family member so they have four. I did talk with a colleague at work who is single...she was thinking of recruiting a team of 4 so she wouldn't be at a disadvantage.
The combine trips to reduce use of car is a great strategy..as is staying home ...we just didn't include them in this challenge. The other issue that has come up is people who have to bike farther to work..should they get more points? The bottom line was ...I know the families involved have busy lives so we tried to keep the rules to just a few, simple ones..so it would be easy to keep track. I did give preference to riding bikes and walking because ( as a public health person) anything I can do to encourage my family to get physical exercise is a big plus. Thanks for all the ideas!
